And so, by the end of these teenage flashbacks, the lovestruck Ishmael Chambers is left with an ambiguous read. The strength of his love, some might argue, is out of his control, thus making his actions permissible and even admirable. Others, however, might argue that he is immoralor pitiful, at bestfor surrendering his agency to an unhealthy infatuation. Entering his young adulthood after Hatsue’s inevitable termination of their fling, a change occurs in Ishmael. In potent contrast to his excessively-sentimental past self, he becomes cold and seemingly heartless, partially due to the war and partially due to the breakup. Despite his transformation, however, his moral compass is really not the least bit improved. He merely exchanges his previous character flaws for new ones, exposing himself as a vindictive person prone to extremes and easily influenced by toil. This version of Ishmael becomes perhaps the most unlikable one when, in searching for justification to hate Hatsue, he turns to prejudice. Immediately following his injury in the war, he remarks, â€Å"‘that fucking goddamn Jap bitch’† (251) to no one in particular. And at a later run-in with Hatsue at the grocery store, after she asks about his missing arm, he â€Å"flatly† tells her that â€Å"‘the Japs did it’† (332). Hi s coldness in these moments, most readers will agree, is inhumane and impermissible, pushing him far toward the negative end of the moral spectrum and nearly past redemption in the eyes of Guterson’s more critical readers. And unfortunately, this is the Ishmael that carries over to the real time trial. While slightly less outward with his anger than he was directly after the war, the real-time Ishmael remains quietly haunted by his past sentiments as he stands with â€Å"a deliberately controlled hysteria †¦ watching [Hatsue] in the courtroom† (93). At this juncture, needless to say, his moral compass is looking down. As impossible as it may seem, Ishmael’s redemption does indeed occur, albeit slowly. The trial at hand presents a complex dilemma and a sea of moral ambiguity for the journalist, and three days’ time proves to be just enough for the introspection and change-of-heart required to renew his sense of morality. Naturally, said dilemma lies in his occupationan occupation burdened with the task of balancing cold, hard truths with personal, empathetic insight. Ishmael, of course, tends towards extremes and consequently struggles with both sides of this balance. His perceptions of truth and empathy alike are skewed by his buried feelings for the defendant’s wife, creating a bias against Kabuo and in favor of the prosecution. This bias is best exemplified when his mother asks about the case, at which point he â€Å"grows cold† and replies that he â€Å"‘has to think he’s guilty †¦ [because] the evidence is very solidly against him’† ( 343), despite his own evidence exonerating Kabuo. Again, a frustrating lack of agency becomes evident here as he fails to take ownership of his spite, clinging instead to his cold and falsely impartial faà §ade. Fortunately, Helen Chambers challenges him, saying that he is â€Å"‘allowing [himself] an imbalance’† (345) and suggesting that he reconsider. Her response, though simple, is essential to his impending character arch. In the dialogue that follows, he opens up ever so slightly, heeding her advice and discarding a bit of apathy for empathy. His resolve does not become truly fixed, though, until afterwards when he revisits the breakup letter from Hatsue. This letter, in his final moments of reflection before bringing forth the evidence, serves as a physical, concrete connection between past and present. When reading Hatsue’s description of him as â€Å"gentle and kind †¦ [with] a large heart,† (442), his present presumably emotionless se lf is forced to meet his past excessively-sentimental one. And therein lies an affirmation of that imbalance with which he has always struggled, coupled with the realization that he is no longer a person characterized by any bit of kindness or gentleness. In a climactic regrasp of agency, he puts the letter away and exonerates the husband of the woman he loves. He does what is right, no longer a mere bystander but rather a strong character with a strong sense of self and of justice. Whether to forgive Ishmael for his shortcomings and accept his growth is of course the personal decision of each reader alone, but regardless of such decisions, Ishmael undoubtedly remains a prime example of the struggle toward self-improvement. When a request is sent to the web app by a user, the app server processes the request, validates the request and then instructs the web application to handle the business logic side of the request. Java EE is a collection of specifications that define how a Java based web application should be w ritten and how the application needs to be implemented in the server so they can work together (MacCaw, 2011). This paper outlines a Java EE design for a web application to be used by a library in which users can do a variety of things on the web page; new users can sign up, existing users can log in, and search for books and other items. General Requirements To develop a web application using Java EE, one needs the NetBeans 6.x as well as an IDE registered server. The Java EE and the Web installation will make it possible to optonally install and then run Apache Tomcat servlet container (6.x.x) as well as a GlassFish V2 app server. The Net Beans installation additionally requires installing the JDK (Java SE Development Kit); JDK includes the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) and tools and API required for running a web app. In Netbeans, the user should create a new file and choose Web Application and name the web application (for instance in this case library) (Juneau, 2013). The project location is then specified from the computer location, which will act as the app server and requires selecting the servers found in Netbeans, such as GlassFishV2 and the Set as main Project box is selected and Finish clicked. The project folder is created by the IDE; it will have all meta data and sources; the project then opens. Next a Java package and Sou rce File are created where a new Java Class is created. The string variables are then declared in the source editor (Bien, 2011) Architecture The app is designed using a two tier architecture whereby a client is able to directly communicate with the server that stores information, such as MySQL database using a suitable API, such as Java Connectivity API. The application is understood and managed by the application server and a database server such as MySQL understands SQL content. Focus will be placed on the home or welcome page which is where the web app will have its query results displayed. The diagrammatic design is shown below; The diagram above shows a schematic representation of the web application and how it will work. The application will actually run from a Java EE server where the servlet is located, together with the JSP page, on a web container. In the EJB container, there is the enterprise bean that runs the servlet. When a client sends a request from the user interface on a browser, the information is handled within the application client container (Borodescu, 2013). On the backside of the Java EE server is a connection to a database where user names are kept as well as information ob books and their status. For example, when a registered user gets to the web interface, they are prompted to enter their names and password; which they do from the web browser application client found in the application client container. The servlet then handles the request through the EJB container and queries the database and returns a result that the user can see on their browser (Anikas, 2016). The Web Interface The web page will be rendered in HTML 5 (headers and title and for correct reading on the web). Using Java Net Beans and JSP, web applications are made for the log in page. The log in pane is a java index page containing a JSP web application for logging in or for registering. Upon reaching the login JSP web app, a user will enter their credentials consisting of a user name and password, or if a new user, they can register. Both users/ guests and administrator will log in from the JSP web application. The administrator with high level rights will also use their password and user name to log-in. Successful log-in takes them to a second page where the administrator can manage items, such as set an item (book) to be available or check a users loan status. For users, they can check item loan details, search for items, or make a comment such as a query. The loan query delivers a loans list. Both the administrator and user can quit and get back to the home page with the log-in JSP web appl ication. These are illustrated in the chart below; The user interface links to a database on the back-end; from the database, a user or administrator can make queries and get results when making comments on an item or searching for a specific item. Shot to death was Hudsons mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson. Missing from the home was Julian King, the son of Jennifers sister Julia Hudson. Three days later the body of 7-year-old Julian, Hudsons nephew, was found in the back seat of an SUV parked on the West Side. He also had been shot. A .45-caliber gun found near the parked SUV was linked to all of the shooting deaths. The SUV was later confirmed to be that of Hudsons murdered brother, Justin King. A gun was also found in a vacant lot in the same neighborhood as the SUV, police said. The case drew national attention because of the fame of family member Jennifer Hudson, who won the best-supporting-actress Academy Award for her 2007 role in the film Dreamgirls. Hudson first gained fame after she was ousted on season three of the television talent show American Idol. Julias Estranged Husband Questioned William Balfour, the estranged husband of Julia Hudson, was taken into custody the day the first two bodies were found and held for 48 hours. He was then taken into custody by the Illinois Department of Corrections on a suspected parole violation. Balfour married Julia Hudson in 2006 but had been separated at the time of the shootings. He was thrown out of the Hudson home by Julias mother in the winter of 2007, according to reports. He denied any involvement with the Hudson case and denied statements that he had been seen with a gun, but remained in police custody. Balfour served almost seven years in prison after being convicted of attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was on parole at the time that the murder took place. Brother-in-Law Arrested Balfour was arrested at Stateville Correctional Center where he was being held on parole violation charges. Prosecutors believed that the shootings at the Hudson family home were the result of an argument Balfour had with Julia about another man. The Trial During opening statements, Balfours defense attorney told jurors that police targeted him for the crime because they were under pressure to solve quickly what they knew would become a high-profile case, because of Jennifer Hudsons notoriety. Foreshadowing clues and images are used to contribute to McMurphy as a figure of Christ. In the beginning of the novel McMurphy is baptized with a shower before entering the ward. The reader is also introduced to Ellis, a character who spends the entire novel in a cross position "nailed against the wall, arms out," (page 20). Another clue to McMurphy's developing character is presented during the electroshock therapy. McMurphy willingly lies down on a cross shaped table, ending up in the same position Ellis foreshadowed. McMurphy also asks for his crown of thorns. Before the therapy a schizophrenic patient approaches him and says "I wash my hands of the whole deal", as Pontius Pilate said to Jesus before sentencing him to death. Jesus was also friends with a prostitute named Mary, just like McMurphy was friends with prostitutes. The development of McMurphy as a Christ figure deepends, when he leads the patients on a fishing trip. McMurphy takes the "twelve of us [patients] towards the ocean," (page 203) just like Jesus' 12 disciples, to test and strengthen their faith in him and empower them. Fish have also been an important religious Christian symbol, as the fishing trip is an important symbol of the novel. When the trip is over, the Chief describes the sense of change that most of the patients had and even claims that they "weren't the same bunch of weak-knees from a nuthouse anymore." (Page 215). This really shows the way McMurphy is starting to guide and lead the patients, just as Jesus lead his disciples. Finally the actions and feelings of the other characters successfully shows the development of McMurphy as a Christ figure and hero. McMurphy is the one who prompted the Chief to speak for the first time in years, when he says "Thank-you." (Page 184) and eventually, McMurphy "heals" Chief of his `deafness' and `dumbness'.

Effective active listening is a must in every communication process. Everyday, people engage in communication processes, but some fail to perform effective active listening skills. Neglecting this important aspect of communication can hamper communication. In the video clip, Planning to Promote Socially Appropriate Behavior, we see how effective active listening skills work to attain communication among the participants. Four teachers serve as participants in the video clip. They are kindergarten teachers who express the importance of teaching affective communication skills. Each teacher is given her chance to express herself to the group, while others listen intently. Notably, several factors affect the success of their communication process, among which is effective active listening. The communication takes place in the school. The teachers are seated along one edge of a long table. Although the table is long, they sit closely with each other, which makes it easy for them to hear the one speaking. This way, they did not have to raise their voices or stand to be recognized before they speak. The environment and position of the teachers notably affect the communication process. Since there is the absence of noise, we find the environment conducive to achieving communication. Obviously, the teachers have a common concept in mind of what needs to be discussed. This is very important in every communication situation. Setting a target for the group will help facilitate understanding. For instance, when holding a faculty meeting, the head should identify the agenda in advance. By doing this, concerns which are not relevant to the given topic may be avoided. Particularly in this meeting, the teachers are exchanging ideas on how to teach affective skills to students. One of the teachers expresses that most of the students she encounters do not show respect in communicating with peers. She feels that students should be taught the proper way to approach others, including their teachers. This statement serves as the lead for other participants to discuss ways on how they incorporate affective skills in their classroom. Aside from serving as the lead, this statement also limits the discussion to one single topic. As Lansberger (1996) notes, active listening requires focusing intentionally on who you are listening to in order to understand what the person is saying. This does not mean agreeing with, but rather understanding what is being said. Particularly, we can note that the teachers in the video achieve focus by speaking one by one. This makes the message come across clearly, making the flow of thought more comprehensible and organized, thus allowing for effective active listening. In the same way, this helps the audience summarize more easily the points raised. Also, according to Lansberger, active listening is present when the listener is able to repeat back in her own words what is said. This pertains to the feedback part. Before one is able to report what she listens to, there is the process of internal communication in which the person tries to â€Å"digest† the perceived ideas. For instance, when we are listening to a lecture, we sometimes hear ourselves repeat exactly what our teacher says. This is a sign that we are listening actively. In the video, we see that the teachers are able to follow the ideas of their colleagues. In addition, although they do not repeat what their colleague is saying, at one point, one teacher is able to complement the thought of the speaker. This is a sign of effective active listening, as the listener is able to construct the statement at the same time the speaker is trying to convey it. Another sign that demonstrates effective active listening is the listener’s facial reaction. As one teacher speaks, we can note that others react by nodding, winking, smiling, and sometimes even bending slightly towards the speaker to hear more clearly. Moreover, they take down notes while someone is speaking. Taking down notes can sometimes distract the speaker’s attention, thus some speakers prefer to give handouts to allow the audience to respond well during a lecture. However, in the video clip, we see that by looking at the speaker while writing, the teachers are still able to maintain the rapport with each other. Therefore, the gesture of taking down notes does not affect the communication process in this particular situation. Although the teachers in the video clip demonstrate evidences for effective active listening, there remain some points to be improved. In particular, the participants who have shared their views could elicit the views of one speaker who did not talk. While it is commendable for the others, especially the teacher wearing a black blouse, to share their views, it would also help if they give a chance to the other participant who has not talked. Eliciting one’s opinion or asking for clarifications (i. e. , asking, What do you think? ) can help detect signs of effective active listening. Through this, the speaker can check if the audience is truly listening. When the listener responds coherently to the speaker’s idea, we can note active listening signs. Otherwise, the speaker should find out factors that hinder effective active listening. Such factors may include outside noise, thoughts of the listener, or language barriers.
